The longlist for the Royal Institute of Philosophy's 'Think' Student Essay Prize for 15-18yos has been announced.
I was one of the judges for this and I can confirm that when Dr. Law says "we received a huge number of entries, and the overall standard was exceptionally high. As a result, many excellent pieces unfortunately did not make it on to the longlist" he's not exaggerating. We received so many essays that we had to extend the deadline for marking, and then we had to do a second round later on.
I personally found it really difficult to choose between the top few essays in each of my categories, and I ended up sending written feedback with some of them because they were so good that they genuinely deserved a place in the finals but there just weren't enough spaces to include everyone.
I really mean it when I say thank you to every student who submitted a piece of work. I read over 100 essays in total and the standard overall was excellent. It genuinely gave me some hope for the world to know that kids like this exist out there and represent the next generation of upcoming academics.
