Domestic Abuse Safe Accommodation Now Available Through MEWSo

MEWSo, a non-profit organisation which helps women from West Asian backgrounds to escape violence in their homes and communities, has joined the Mayor of London’s DASA (Domestic Abuse Safe Accommodation) partnership, adding more support for their network.

DASA aims to ensure that anyone fleeing from domestic abuse has somewhere safe to go. Its partners are Mindworks UK, Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre, Nour, Sister Circle and now MEWSo, who are also offering group counselling for survivors of domestic abuse.

Counselling is available in English, Arabic and Farsi for groups. There are also limited places available for one-to-one counselling where required. Keep an eye on MEWSo’s website for the referral form, which will be available soon. Individuals will be able to refer themselves, or professionals will also be able to make referrals as needed.

An important thing to note is that, as well as providing accommodation to those who need it, including short-term shelter in refuges or emergency hotels, DASA also helps women who want to remain in their homes but need to put measures in place to make it safer for them to do so. This initiative, known as the ‘sanctuary scheme,’ aims to address the fact that often, people do not want to completely leave their relationships behind even if those relationships are abusive.

With organisations such as MEWSo on board, London is well set up to help people from many different backgrounds, including refugees and asylum seekers.
